We have arrived in Colombia! Our flights went well on Wednesday and River traveled like a pro! It was one of the easiest days of travel I’ve ever had en-route to South America which is pretty good considering we have a 1 year old now. We were able to fly non stop from Toronto to Bogota which definitely helped!
Our friends, Brion and Annette are hosting us and it was so exciting to see them and their three children! They are currently doing their spanish study here and we’re grateful they’ve taken time out of their lives to hang out with us and introduce us to Colombia.
We’ve been asking them lots of questions as we learn more about the culture here, the country and how New Tribes is working here. Some things seem really similar to us based on other countries we’ve been to in South American while other things are of course very different. Our first impressions have been very good. The people have been very friendly and helpful and the country is beautiful! We are staying very close to the airport so the planes often roar above us as they pass by sometimes even rattling the windows. There is no hot water here so we’re getting used to heating water for dishes, and using electric shower heads. The food is delightful and we’re loving the fresh fruit! We had “chicken in a bag” our first night which was the best chicken I’ve had in a long time and we’ve had some amazing empanadas and Peruvian food too! Yesterday seven of us squeezed into the back of a cab when we went out. The driving here is similar to other places we’ve been where lanes are optional as well as most traffic laws. And yet somehow you grow to feel strangely safe as you weave in and out of traffic.
Just wanted to share some of our first thoughts and impressions of Colombia. We will keep you posted in the days ahead…
