The locals call it “the map of years.” We use it as a tool to help orientate the audience to what section of the scripture we are talking about and to develop the idea of a progression through a storyline. In a ministry location with conflicting religions it also helps to fend off questions about why what we are teaching is different than what they have heard from their religious leaders. We use the timeline in conjunction with an illustration of a court in session. “What happens if one of the judge shows up at the court after the trial is nearly over? Will he be able to judge the case accurately? No! He didn’t hear the case from the beginning.”

Since so many of the things they have been taught are fairly recent in origin, the timeline helps them visualize that. We say: “You are asking a question from this timeframe way down here at the end. We are talking about a timeframe way up here at the beginning. How can we answer a question way down there when we are still way up here? Just listen and we will get there. Don’t judge the case until you have heard all of it from beginning to end.” Since our timeline is 10m (33ft) in length it takes a while to walk from one end to the other. We have taught 16 lessons so far and we are still on our first entry on the map of years. This is a picture of Francois teaching on Atamu and Hawa (a.k.a. Adam and Eve). Momentum will really start to pick up next week as we cover nearly 2000 years in a week’s worth of stories!

Pray that people begin to understand that God has a purpose in telling His story and that they will begin to see themselves as an integral part of His purpose.

Every day before we start the teaching we hang up a timeline.
