The man told us a story of his recent heartbreak. I had the impression he was attempting to persuade us to be kind to him on the merit that his current situation was very recent and more importantly not his own doing.
I suppose it is human nature to downplay our own part in our failures but I didn’t understand why he refused our offer to use our shower, indicating vaguely that there was a shower where he was staying.
Incongruous with what he told us, he carried a scent that was unmistakably the result of an accumulation of body odor over a long period of time. Although I was familiar with this smell, I could not relate to a person wanting to keep it.
As we ate dinner together, our conversation turned toward the Lord. The man told us he’d grown up in the church so he knew all about the Bible.
It is possible that he really did accept Christ as a child. His regret over the way his life had gone so far from God seemed genuine. The Lord is the One who judges the heart.
Whatever the case, the truth we spoke of was old news. He’d heard it all before. Knew it. But didn’t live it.
So where do you go from here, when the Good News is old news?
Among the unreached tribes of Colombia are some who play church very well. Having heard the Gospel in the trade language, and understood just enough to adopt the form of Christianity without the life-changing truth, these tribal people seem dangerously content with their limited knowledge.
As missionaries with NTM, we are trained to start teaching God’s Word at the beginning, where the Son of God, the Creator, first appears in the Bible. A person may have heard of Jesus and attend church every Sunday, but until they know the One True God, they cannot experience the day-to-day power of the Gospel.
By methodically presenting each essential truth in the tribal language, we’d be able to address any confusion, making sure the Gospel message is clear.
Please pray for our future ministry in Colombia, for the unreached tribal group the Lord would have us serve. And pray for us as the Holy Spirit prepares us to live out the Gospel among them.
