Jimena’s Destruction

September 11, 2009 by Rachel Chapman

Last week, Hurricane Jimena wreaked havoc on the western coast of Mexico.  Some co-workers, Benders & Reeds, were right in the storm’s path and together with their community lost virtually everything!

The water was 7 feet deep in Benders’ house with about a foot of mud sludge – they lost EVERYTHING.  In Reeds’ house, the water rose to 5 feet with about 6 inches of mud sludge.  They had been preparing to go to a translation workshop in the US, so they had some bags packed that they were able to save.

These pictures are from Benders, who rode out the storm at a neighbor’s house which sits on higher ground.  Even there, they ended up staying the afternoon and night on the roof.

Included in what they lost was: homeschooling books & curriculum, towels, sheets, furniture, appliances, books, the kids’ toys, clothing, mattresses, food, files, power tools, etc.

There is a fund set up to help the Benders & Reeds and the community where they are living.  If you’d like to help these families recover the things they lost, you can donate HERE.
