Gotta be creative…

January 10, 2014 by Rachel Chapman

One of the hard things in this language is keeping straight who said what or who did what.  They have the same pronoun for he/she/it.  And all those have the same verb prefixes for the actor of an action and the object of an action.  It can get a little complicated.

So, as my language helper and I began to work through Jonah, I found she wasn’t understanding me.  I started putting in all the proper names for each action to clarify who was doing what, but she was still confused.  So, I got out the visuals…

Impromptu visual aids

My camera became Yahweh.  Jonah was a little lotion bottle.  I drew out Ninevah & Joppa & Tarshish and the sea.  A pill box became the boat.

And, praise God, we had understanding!  Jonah 1 is now finished.

When I get back to Las Moras, we’ll continue on.  She’s curious to finish the story!  Last she knows, Jonah was swallowed by the fish, but didn’t die.
