{"id":1139,"date":"2012-06-19T12:16:30","date_gmt":"2012-06-19T17:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/?p=1139"},"modified":"2012-06-19T13:48:32","modified_gmt":"2012-06-19T18:48:32","slug":"sharing-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/2012\/06\/19\/sharing-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharing culture&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we first moved into the village, we were regularly asked, &#8220;Do you know how to make tortillas?&#8221;\u00a0 That question was rapidly followed by, &#8220;Do you guys have food?&#8221; and &#8220;Are you eating?&#8221;.\u00a0 We assured them that yes, we had food, we were eating well, and that we didn&#8217;t know how to make tortillas, but we wanted to learn.<\/p>\n<p>After a bit, when someone else asked, &#8220;Do you know how to make tortillas?&#8221; one of us, feeling foolish in our incompetence, answered, &#8220;No, but we can make bread.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Oh, good.&#8221; was the reply.\u00a0 &#8220;Then you can eat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We realized then that the people weren&#8217;t being nosy, they were concerned for us how we were able to eat if we didn&#8217;t now how to make tortillas.\u00a0 For them, bread for them is a special treat that they make every once in a while.\u00a0 And, only a few know how to make it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1193\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1193\" style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_1844-lo-res.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1193  \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_1844-lo-res.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_1844-lo-res.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_1844-lo-res-150x88.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2012\/06\/IMG_1844-lo-res-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My neighbor made this delicious bread in her outdoor brick oven.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We quickly learned how to make tortillas.\u00a0 The people enjoyed watching us learn to make tortillas and were relieved that we could take care of ourselves by making tortillas and bread.\u00a0 Now we eat both tortillas and bread.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, a few people have come us to teach them to make bread.
