{"id":828,"date":"2011-03-30T13:31:55","date_gmt":"2011-03-30T18:31:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/?p=828"},"modified":"2011-03-30T13:55:47","modified_gmt":"2011-03-30T18:55:47","slug":"all-i-wanted-was-ice-cream-and-a-hot-shower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/2011\/03\/30\/all-i-wanted-was-ice-cream-and-a-hot-shower\/","title":{"rendered":"all I wanted was ice-cream and a hot shower&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I woke up early on my birthday so I could go running with a doctor who visits the village for a few days each month.\u00a0 We were just getting to know her, and I was excited to find a running partner.<\/p>\n<p>When I got back from running, we girls ate some yummy muffins Sarah made special for my birthday.\u00a0 She took Dan breakfast in his bed (Dan had caught a nasty bug, and after a round of strong antibiotics, he felt worse.\u00a0 So, the visiting doctor started him on a series of penicillin shots.) and gave him his 3rd shot of penicillin.<\/p>\n<p>I was in my room planning for a language session I was about to have with a friend on the other side of the village.\u00a0 Sarah was going to go with me.<\/p>\n<p>All of a sudden, Sarah, sticks her head in my room and says in a deadly serious voice, &#8220;Rachel, run for the doctor.\u00a0 Dan isn&#8217;t responding to me.&#8221;<br \/>\nI jumped out of my chair and told her, &#8220;The doctor is leaving for our neighboring town today.\u00a0 She usually leaves about this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As I ran, I prayed she would be at the clinic still.\u00a0 As I got close, I saw the truck was still there, Thank you, Lord!!\u00a0 The doctor, nurse, and health promoter were loading the truck and about to leave.<\/p>\n<p>After I told them the message, the doctor ran back into the clinic and grabbed some medicine from the pharmacy; we all piled into their truck and raced back to our house.<\/p>\n<p>Dan had gone into anaphylactic shock immediately after the penicillin shot.\u00a0 His heart was racing, his blood pressure was really high.\u00a0 His extremities were numb and he couldn&#8217;t move his body.\u00a0 He stared at the ceiling and tried to speak, but his lips only quivered.\u00a0 He was having difficulty breathing as his throat was closing up.\u00a0 He was VERY pale, and we were very scared.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor quickly injected him with hydro-cortisone that she had grabbed at the clinic and monitored his vitals as he began to stabilize.<\/p>\n<p>We praised God that the doctor was still in the village when Dan went into shock.\u00a0 We praised Him that the doctor had correctly anticipated the dilemma and grabbed the appropriate medicine.\u00a0 We praised God that Dan was ALIVE!!<\/p>\n<p>After 2 days, Dan was still extremely weak.\u00a0 Upon the recommendation of the doctor in the village (who was leaving herself) and a fellow missionary doctor and considering the continued gravity of the situation, a mission plane flew Dan, Sarah, and Josiah Alkire to the city so Dan could get tests done to check his lungs and heart and be close to medical care.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_831\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-831\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2011\/03\/March-2011-091-lo-res.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-831\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2011\/03\/March-2011-091-lo-res.jpg\" alt=\"Medical evacuation to the big city\" width=\"640\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2011\/03\/March-2011-091-lo-res.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2011\/03\/March-2011-091-lo-res-150x101.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2011\/03\/March-2011-091-lo-res-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-831\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Medical evacuation to the big city<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2011\/03\/choco_ice_cream_cone_zekt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-830\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2011\/03\/choco_ice_cream_cone_zekt-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"choco_ice_cream_cone_zekt\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2011\/03\/choco_ice_cream_cone_zekt-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2011\/03\/choco_ice_cream_cone_zekt-119x150.jpg 119w, https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/rachel-chapman\/files\/2011\/03\/choco_ice_cream_cone_zekt.jpg 381w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a>Since Katie and I cannot stay in the village by ourselves for security reasons at this time, a co-worker flew in with the plane and drove us out.<\/p>\n<p>So, now we are in the city.\u00a0 Dan is recovering.\u00a0 Yesterday he was up and around a bit and talking!\u00a0 He is still very weak and has no energy.\u00a0 But, there is improvement!!\u00a0 We thank God!<\/p>\n<p>And, now that we are in the city, I was able to enjoy some late-birthday ice-cream!\u00a0 And, I am enjoying a hot shower EVERY DAY!!!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I woke up early on my birthday so I could go running with a doctor who visits the village for a few days each month.\u00a0 We were just getting to know her, and I was excited to find a running partner.
