Many of you are familiar with the time when Jesus shared the story of the widow and her last mite. Here is the account of it from the NET Bible.
Then he sat down opposite the offering box, and watched the crowd putting coins into it. Many rich people were throwing in large amounts. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, worth less than a penny. He called his disciples and said to them, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the offering box than all the others. For they all gave out of their wealth. But she, out of her poverty, put in what she had to live on, everything she had.”
We have used this reference in some of our communications with people and wanted to explore this further. Why did she give “everything she had.” What was her confidence in? Was it just, “Well, I really don’t have anything to offer, so I might as well just give it all.” or was there more to it? Maybe the question should be, “Who was her confidence in?” When our sufficiency is Christ alone, possessions become a privileged stewardship. Maybe the poor widow was so assured of the promises of God and his sufficiency, that she had nothing to worry about, she had Him. Who could ask for more?!
Where is Your Sufficiency
2Co 9:8 And- And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed;
2Co 3:5-6 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
Sufficient in every way
We are getting nearer, every day, to our departure date. The Lord has continued to bring our support ever higher and closer to our goal….yet we are not really concerned about it, because our sufficiency comes from Our Lord Jesus Christ, not from money or pledged support. So we await we confidence in the Lord, to step forward in faith, knowing He will take care of us!
Sowing & Reaping
It reminds us of the Macedonians and Paul. Maybe she knew this: 2 Cor. 9:6-12 “The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each one of you should give just as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, because God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace overflow to you so that so that because you have enough of everything in every way at all times, you will overflow in every good work. Just as it is written, “He has scattered widely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness remains forever.” Now God who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your supply of seed and will cause the harvest of your righteousness to grow. You will be enriched in every way so that you may be generous on every occasion, which is producing through us thanksgiving to God, because the service of this ministry is not only providing for the needs of the saints but is also overflowing with many thanks to God.
