Hey guys… below is a post written by Brandon and Grace Gloor a couple who is a year ahead of us in the training. This is their blog and perspective about the New Tribes missionary training they are currently attending. I like how they talk about the importance of training. A long training program seems daunting at first but it will definitely be worth it once in a tribe! We want to know what we’re getting ourselves into and how to handle it. Thanks for reading! -jinny
Why is a young couple who is headed into foreign missions with an urgency to reach the lost stopping to train for up to two years with a mission agency they are not yet even committed to go with?
…Why not choose a quicker training route with another mission? Or forgo the training and just go like the missionaries did in the old days? These are excellent questions. Grace and I have faced them multiple times as we check with our own consciences. “Really, what about people who are lost and dying RIGHT NOW?”
Well, to answer such questions, first we brought them to the Lord in prayer. After giving it to the Lord, we still felt that we are here in the USA right now for a purpose. Since we are not yet on any foreign mission field and we have the opportunity to get some training before we go, the benefits of being more effective missionaries outweigh the urgency. Whether excellent, complete missionary training takes 1 month or 5 years, that’s what we want. We’d rather be outstanding missionaries that can effectively share Christ after 2 years training than to serve poorly right away.
So regardless of the time-frame, why choose the New Tribes missionary training? Well, for one thing, we are seriously considering pursuing a tribal church planting role through New Tribes Mission, and they require the highest level of training. But even if we went with another organization such as Hope in Haiti, it so happens that the New Tribes Missionary Training Center in Roach, Missouri is the best training for overseas missionary work anywhere! We can use the skills we are learning here on any field, serving with any mission agency. The training here is comprehensive. It includes instruction in:
Recognizing and changing worldviews
Language & culture-learning skills
Technology and practical skills for remote missionary work
Safety in dangerous countries
Managing time and finances
Husband / wife relationships as missionaries
Parenting on the mission field
Working as a team with other missionaries
Animism and folk religions
Teaching literacy on the field
Missionary health skills
Raising up a mature Biblical church
…and many “small” topics that affect a missionary’s life and ministry.
Yes it costs us time and money. We are praying that God would show mercy on the people we will soon be working with, that He would keep them on this side of eternity long enough to hear the good news of Christ the Savior. But we don’t want to rush in and do a shoddy job. We will be representing YOU, our supporters, and God Himself as missionaries–we can’t afford to blunder by not getting good training while we are here on the home front.
