Abigail and Luke blowing out the fire.

It all started with the wonderful idea of celebrating the end of the school year with making Smores. Of course, this was Ginger’s idea and it took a little of planning to get the three simple items needed. The chocolate and graham crackers are something we can usually find on our island. So, we had no problem finding those two items on our island. However, the marshmallows were a little harder to find. In the end, Ginger asked another missionary to look for marshmallows in Manila, two months ago. To give you a little perspective, Manila to us, would be like driving from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Chicago, and then flying to Detroit. Ginger was excited that her friend did find the marshmallows and brought them back to our island.

In preparation to school ending on June 22 and thereafter the Smores, Stephen needed to prepare some kindling for the fire. Both boys jumped right in and wanted to help cut the wood. Abigail then asked if she could help split the kindling. Stephen thought she could do this and he showed her how to split the kindling with the machete. After a few minutes watching Abigail, Stephen then went inside to get some coffee. Shortly thereafter, Abigail comes inside with her hand covered.

Luke and Rebekah roasting marshmallows.

Obviously, something is wrong and concern crosses our faces knowing that Abigail was just working with a machete. She wasn’t crying but she was concerned that she had cut herself. Well, after taking a quick look we decided the wound needed stitches and that a tetanus shot would be a good idea.

So, Stephen took Abigail to the “local” hospital, which is about a 30-minute drive from our village. We praise the Lord that the wound wasn’t more severe and that Abigail still has 10 functioning fingers. Please continue to pray for physical safety for our family.

So, how were those Smores? Wonderful with all our fingers sticky with gooey marshmallows! We had enough to share. Too bad you couldn’t be here to join us in this celebration.

It all started with the wonderful idea of celebrating the end of the school year with making Smores.
