Good Friday – Forsaken

April 1, 2010 by Todd Nelson

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”  Have you ever felt so isolated and alone that you hurt?  Imagine an eternity spent completely isolated, separated from any contact with anybody.  This is the fate that awaits all who do not believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior.  The Bible puts it this way, “these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.” (2 Thessalonians 1:9)  God’s judgment for sin is eternal.  All who die without trusting in Christ will never see relief from the pain of eternal isolation from God.  The pain of the worst loneliness ever felt on earth is nothing in comparison to the eternal loneliness of separation from God.

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”  This was Jesus’ cry from the cross just before He died (Matthew 27:46).  At that moment, Jesus Christ fully experienced the extreme loneliness and complete isolation described in 2 Thessalonians.  He took our eternal judgment for our sin upon Himself.  Jesus Christ felt the most intense loneliness that could ever be felt.  He was completely cut off from the Father.  Jesus did this for us.  He did this for you.  Jesus also said from the cross “it is finished” (John 19:30).  The only thing needed for anyone to escape God’s eternal judgment for sin is to simply believe in Jesus as Savior (Romans 3:21-31).  Sin and its penalty are eternally forgiven in Jesus Christ.  This forgiveness is ours by faith in Jesus who died in our place.

This Good Friday, take time to reflect on Jesus and what He has done.  If you have already placed your faith in Him, then be thankful as AWAYO was thankful.  If you have not trusted only in Christ as Savior, consider Him and what He has done on the cross.  Why should you remain eternally “forsaken” since Christ chose to be “forsaken” in your place?  Jesus willingly took sin upon Himself so you could be forgiven.  He died so you could have real life found only in Him.
