This Thanksgiving I contemplated the difference between thanksgiving and gratitude. Gratitude is a feeling, whereas to thank is an action. The Scriptures tell us to give thanks in all things (I Thes. 5:16), but I don’t believe I am told to be grateful for all things. I can express my gratitude by thanking, but I don’t always feel grateful for all things. In Hebrews 13:15, we are told to give a sacrifice of praise. So, I will choose to be thankful even if I don’t always feel like it.
What am I thankful for today:
I am thankful that my adult children are doing well, but I don’t always feel grateful for the miles that are between us.
I am thankful for this season of fund raising, but I don’t always feel grateful that we are not currently fully funded.
I am thankful for the missionaries who are heading to the mission field.
I am thankful for books.
I am thankful that God is faithful to teach my heart, but I don’t always like His lessons.
