December 23, 2013 by Tom

A while back, we shared some fun facts about our tiny island in the south pacific via our twitter account- The Carlton Fam @ThatAllMayKnow, and now we want to share them with you! You can check out our latest tweets by following us on twitter or by taking a glance at the sidebar of our website. Also, coming up will be a tweets collection called “Things People Ask For” where I tweeted some of the requests for thing we got in the village during the month before we came home for Iris’ surgery.

For now, take a look at our Tigak Island Fun Facts, with 3 BONUS facts at the end never before tweeted. For fun I am including some pics of all different kinds of animals we cross paths with in our lives out there! Enjoy!

Tigak Island Fun Fact: Young guys on our island often walk around blaring reggae music. Boombox with cassettes? Nope. Radios with SD Cards.

Tigak Island Fun Fact: We rarely swim on the island not cause we don’t want to but because surrounding it the water is super shallow…& hot. 🙁

Tigak Island Fun Fact: Our front yard is basically the village playground thanks to a tire swing. Most adults are afraid to swing on it, though.

Animals

Tigak Island Fun Fact: Population comprised of 4-5 clans based on matrilineal descent. Clans are identified with an animal, usually a bird.

Tigak Island Fun Fact: Main staples include fish, sago and rice. What is sago? Its the insides of the sago palm tree processed and cooked.

Tigak Island Fun Fact: There are 2 little stores on our island that sell crackers, tuna, rice, inst. coffee, creamer, fishing hooks & string.

Animals1

Tigak Island Fun Fact: Everyone here depends on rain water, including us, for drinking & cooking. Rains often, sometimes not often enough…

Tigak Island Fun Fact: Non-human residents-tropical birds, crabs, pigs, monitor lizards, geckos, cascas’, lots of dogs, no mice and no cats.

Tigak Island Fun Fact: Monday mornings a community meeting takes place. Hot topics: gambling, dress styles, religion, fighting… in that order.

Animals5

Tigak Island Fun Fact: Walk along the beaches & find them lined with dugout canoes. Used for fishing & traveling. Huge part of village life.

Tigak Island Fun Fact: 1/2 mi. long and 1/4 mi. wide. Home to about 300 people living on about 1/3 of the island. 2/3 Mangrove swamp.

Tigak Island Fun Fact: Watch out for crab holes…and crabs, especially at night. Twist your ankle or prepare for battle with “armed” crabs?

Animals4

Tigak Island Fun Fact: Its covered in coconut trees. All you can eat/drink coconut. 🙂 Mild concern that a coconut may fall on your head. 🙁

BONUS!!!

Tigak Island Fun Fact: The ground is mostly sand. Closer to the beach its soft and light colored, up at our house its hard and darker.

Tigak Island Fun Fact: Every family has 2 “houses” on their “land”: a structure on stilts with a few rooms for sleeping and a structure on the ground for cooking.

Tigak Island Fun Fact: Did we ever tell you the island is about 8 feet above sea level? No? Well it is. And yes, we’ve had tsunami warnings before. 🙁
