Visit Over to Baja

February 26, 2024 by Tom

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to visit our team working among the Triqui people of Baja California. Some of you may remember that we began writing about this work at the end of 2019, right before COVID hit. Unfortunately, COVID complicated the situation and set the work back a bit.

I traveled over with two other men, one from our consultant team and the other from our Spanish language and Mexican culture program, to visit the team. We spent several days with the team, talking over curriculum and trying to understand how the team was doing and what work was needed to move forward.

The Triqui group living in Baja originally came from the state of Oaxaca. Eduardo and his wife Vero and their co-worker Miguel have worked among the people for the past 16 years. Eduardo speaks the Triqui language and engages in foundational Bible teaching with mixed groups several times weekly, both in Spanish and Triqui. Vero teaches a mid-week ladies’ Bible study in Spanish, and Miguel teaches the children in Spanish. Together, they are seeing the Lord bear fruit through His Word in the lives of the people.

This team has also been an encouragement to me. The language itself is complex, and it took years for Eduardo to learn. Nevertheless, they have remained in the work and are seeing fruit among the people. Their dedication to the work, despite some major setbacks, such as team changes, health issues, and COVID, has been a source of challenge and encouragement to me. It reminds me of why we are all here- to see Christ made known and churches planted among the world’s least-reached peoples.

Did You Know?

Mexico is home to over 130 million people. While Mexico is the world’s most populous Spanish-speaking country, you may find it surprising to learn that Mexico’s indigenous groups speak over 364 variations of 68 different languages!
