{"id":3113,"date":"2011-05-11T18:16:10","date_gmt":"2011-05-12T01:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thatallmayknow.org\/?p=3113"},"modified":"2017-10-11T10:13:15","modified_gmt":"2017-10-11T15:13:15","slug":"mileage-to-missouri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/tom-carlton\/2011\/05\/11\/mileage-to-missouri\/","title":{"rendered":"Mileage to Missouri"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/tom-carlton\/files\/2011\/05\/bundledup.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3114\" title=\"bundledup\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/tom-carlton\/files\/2011\/05\/bundledup-200x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>About a month ago, we contacted our home church in Adrian, MI with a need to borrow someone\u2019s car for a short trip we were thinking of making down to Missouri, upon our return to America.\u00a0 A few people offered their car\u2019s to us, but one couple in our church really wanted to rent a car for our travels.\u00a0 They wanted to make sure we were comfortable and safe in a reliable vehicle.\u00a0 We were so thankful for his offer, and it ended up being a huge blessing&#8230; and an opportunity to ride in style! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Planning the timing of this trip seemed difficult because of how close Beth is to her due date.\u00a0 However, the timing worked out perfectly where we would be speaking at our sister church &amp; supporting church, Ogden, in Adrian on a Sunday, then prepare for our trip on Monday and depart on Tuesday to return the following Monday; a six day trip which we returned from this past Monday at midnight.<\/p>\n<p>Our first day of traveling landed us through Ohio into Aurora, Indiana at a missionary retreat center called <a href=\"http:\/\/paracletos.org\/baan-sabai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Baan Sabai<\/a> (which is Thai for \u201ctranquil house\u201d).\u00a0 <em>\u201cNestled in the hills of southeastern Indiana are 72 acres of hardwood forest and creeks. Surrounded by the beauty of God&#8217;s creation, and abounding in wildlife, peace and tranquility just go with the territory.\u201d<\/em> Baan Sabai is a beautiful log home, large enough to host several families to stay at a time.\u00a0 How do I describe the atmosphere of this place?\u00a0 Warm, cozy, inviting, relaxing.\u00a0 Oh, and kid friendly, too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/tom-carlton\/files\/2011\/05\/baansabi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3115\" title=\"baansabi\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/tom-carlton\/files\/2011\/05\/baansabi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This missionary retreat center is a ministry of Paracletos, Inc.\u00a0 Our friends, Dave &amp; Irene Lewis started Paracletos as an answer to a huge need in missions: pastoral care for missionaries.\u00a0 Having spent a number of years as missionaries in Thailand, they saw first hand the needs for this shepherding ministry.\u00a0 Not only are\u00a0they shepherds at heart, but they also train others, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/tom-carlton\/files\/2011\/05\/230689_174732735914051_151222084931783_393420_5024675_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3124\" title=\"baansabai3\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/tom-carlton\/files\/2011\/05\/230689_174732735914051_151222084931783_393420_5024675_n-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>whether it be pastors, church mission teams, or individuals in how to best care for their missionaries.\u00a0 It really is an incredible ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Anyways, back to our story.\u00a0 So we stayed with them for a couple of days and it was great.\u00a0 It was very relaxing and our time with them was so encouraging.\u00a0 Because they are shepherds at heart, we were able to open up to them and share openly and personally about the ups and downs of our last eight months in Papua New Guinea.\u00a0 Because they have been missionaries themselves, they are able to empathize and understand the struggles we missionaries face in ways that most people can\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/tom-carlton\/files\/2011\/05\/BaanSabi2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3116\" title=\"BaanSabi2\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/tom-carlton\/files\/2011\/05\/BaanSabi2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our time was both edifying and refreshing, and we could go on and on about it.\u00a0 The only downside was that we did not have much time to stay because of the length of our trip.\u00a0 Needless to say, however: if you are someone in ministry (whether overseas or stateside), and you need time out to get refreshed and be encouraged, you gotta check this place out: <a href=\"http:\/\/paracletos.org\">http:\/\/paracletos.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We hit the road again early Thursday morning to head to Missouri.\u00a0 The drive was pretty uneventful, other than the fact that I got majorly irritated because it seemed like every hundred miles there was major road construction.\u00a0 What\u2019s up with that?\u00a0 Does every town in America need to be in the middle of a road project?!\u00a0 (Is this reverse culture shock?)<\/p>\n<p>Anyways, we made it to Missouri in great time.\u00a0 Jude did fantastic being in his car seat for so long.\u00a0 I also did fantastic considering I drove the entire time, just without the car seat! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/tom-carlton\/files\/2011\/05\/mtcsign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3117\" title=\"mtcsign\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ethnos360.org\/tom-carlton\/files\/2011\/05\/mtcsign-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>In Missouri, we stayed at our mission\u2019s training center.\u00a0 This was great because most of our business being there would take place on this campus.\u00a0 Our reasons for going to Missouri were five fold: 1) Share an update at one of our supporting churches, Fellowship Bible Church, 2) Connect with our former staff advisors Pat &amp; Luann Brown, 3) Reconnect with some of our fellow missionaries living there for mutual encouragement and edification and 4) Be available to any of the missionary candidates heading to Papua New Guinea to ask questions or hear some of our insights, and 5) See Beth\u2019s sister Abby and her fiance Nathan.\u00a0 (The only reason we put family last is because we had just seen them a week earlier and had some great time together)<\/p>\n<p>We were only there for three full days and it flew by!\u00a0 Being at the Missionary Training Center again felt like being at a huge family reunion.\u00a0 Because of the short nature of our visit we were unable to see all of the \u201cfamily\u201d we would have liked too.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude00\u00a0 The people we were able to see were wonderful.
