It is hard to believe that 30 years ago I went to the Philippines for my first assignment with New Tribes Mission.
It was on a trip to the Philippines on the way United States from Australia. I was staying with the Waggoner family at Subic Bay. They did not want me traveling alone so I traveled with the Chaplin Chamberlin and his wife and daughter to Baguio. We then ventured into the Benget Provence with a driver to see the villages in the mountains of the Philippines.
There was a rain storm and a landslide that prevented us from continuing our journey. We had to go down the mountain onto the main highway.
It was getting dark so we decided to stay the night at the NTM flight center in the mountains. There they were constructing a dorm with a school under it for the children of NTM. They had children in a program for Dyslexics at Faith Academy and wanted to continue this program. They were praying for a teacher in this area.
My training was in Specific Language Discibility (teaching Dyslexics). I had been praying for a position to use this program for God’s Children.
They found out about this and asked me if I would like to come and teach in their school. I said I would reply in a couple weeks as I would be returning to this center with the Waggoner family.
During those two weeks several situations happened that let me to want to return and work at this school. One was that my grandmother had died. She had been one that was holding me to want to return to the US. At a Servicemen’s Center meating, the speaker was talking on "How to Know God’s Will" . I used much of what he shared to help me decide: Like knowing that the Lord had put the idea in my mind while I was visiting a school in Papua, New Guinea. Having people around me excited about the idea as I was. And the Word of God said to go.
Therefore, upon my return to the center, I told them I would come. That was the start of years of service with New Tribes Mission.
