March 27, 2012 by Bryan and Shara Moritz Aute and Samson helping to get the mambu (bamboo) ready! This man is getting the mambu (bamboo) ready for Bryan to try as well. This is used to pull back and forth to cause friction to start turning up the heat! Aute helping us set up all the tools to make fire. Dry grass, big stick with wedged in little stick to create air flow. Mambu to make the friction happen. Here we go! http://youtu.be/2t_FQVJtt5s Bryan now has to blow on the dry grass to get the little coal he made from rubbing the stick and mambu to catch the grass on fire! Bryan still blowing! Look at that smoke... he is almost there! Paia (fire) I jumped in to try one time. I got smoke but tired out at the end. Later I found out this is man's work not meri's (woman's) work. The next time we tried I really wanted to do it but I knew I should not try being a meri. It was fun watching the guys finally get the fire going. I am so glad we have matches here now and so are the nationals, this is a lot of work!
