A Wusaraambyan Woman hiking home from her garden.
Duraatmatnuyak, a Wusaraambyan Woman, carries a baby in her hand-made string bag (bilum) as she hikes home from her garden on the grass airstrip, dug by hand for 7 years.. She carries sweet potatoes, taro, spinach-like greens, and firewood on her back and head with a bush knife on top.

Women lead a hard life in Wusuraambya.  They carry heavy loads from their gardens to their homes everyday because there is no refrigeration in the village.

Often they hike one or two hours one way to their gardens since they are inherited and not necessarily close to their bamboo huts.

Not only do the women carry vegetables but often we see them carrying  firewood and a child along with the sweet potatoes, taro, and “greens”.  Often the weight of what they are carrying exceed their body weight. They do not have shoes!

At a young age, the girls are taught to carry heavy loads of firewood and produce from their gardens.

Becky's friend, barefooted, in the village carries a heavy load of sweet potatoes and taro from her garden daily. Gardens are inherited so are not necessarily close to their sleeping huts.
