What is “. . .”?

November 2, 2007 by

A tribal man in Papua New Guinea

Elimbari believers have formed a committee of 4 men and 2 women to translate chronological lessons into their own language. The 6 of them are getting together every Tuesday and Friday to translate the 1 Timothy lessons.

They are translating from a trade language version of the lessons.  Back in the Spring, Jim began translating the chronological lessons of the Epistles into the Melanesian Pidgin English.  The Elimbari translators are among the first to use them.

Jim recently visited the Elimbari tribe and spent time with the translation team.  After he returned to his regular ministry, he got a phone call from the committee. They asked, "On Page 8 of 1 Timothy, Lesson 1, it says ‘. . .’   What does that mean?"

Jim explained that the ". . ." (ellipsis) were an indication that  the verse continues, but that they were just to use the portion written in the lesson.  Jim could hear the committee being very excited in the background as he explained.

  • Praise the Lord that the 1 Timothy lessons are being translated into Elimbari by the people themselves.  Pray that the committee will work well together to finish this project.
  • Pray for Jim as he translates the lessons from other Epistles into Melanesian Pidgin English.
  • Pray that Ruth will soon be able to resume working on the lessons designed for the tribal people.
