Dec 1990 Missionary Training Final Weeks

December 5, 1990 by David and Shari Ogg

Dear Friends,

It has been a terrific semester here at the language school. Our live language field trip was so helpful and enjoyable! Our language helper and his family became very special to us.

Now we are in the last few weeks of the term and have “changed gears” a bit:

Shari is taking a medical course designed to familiarize her with the kind of work she will likely be involved in when we move into a tribal village. She is learning how to give injections and suture open wounds. Handling fractures, infections and other tropical illnesses. How to assist in childbirth if necessary. Also pulling teeth and other dental treatments. The course will be especially helpful for us to know our limitations. (The question often arises can we treat this person ourselves or do we need to fly them to a hospital.) Medical help is important and is a good way to demonstrate the love of Christ.

David is taking a course called Missionary Technology. Most tribal villages have no electricity. Did you know that a good sized solar electric panel only produces enough power to run a 50 watt light bulb! We are learning how to set up a highly efficient 12V DC home. Many areas are being covered in the course: power sources (wind, hydroelectric, solar, etc.), running water, solar hot water, water filtering, and sewage just to name a few.

UPDATE: Eye Surgery

David is scheduled for outpatient muscle surgery on both eyes on Dec. 18 at l0am. We thank God for enabling the second doctor to see that I needed 30 p.d. of correction, not just 15 p.d.! Please pray for the surgery and for a quick recovery. We hope to leave for California just 3 days after the surgery!

SCHEDULE:

  • DEC. 18 DAVID’S EYE SURGERY
  • DEC. 21 LEAVE FOR CALIF (ALSO OUR 3RD ANNIV.!)
  • DEC. 23 ARRIVE IN CA

JAN. – JUNE (WHAT WE’LL BE DOING)
