Genesis 1 – From Chaos to Order

October 25, 2026 by David and Robin Watters

God’s Pattern for Leadership
Genesis 1 opens with a world that is formless and void — chaotic, unordered, uninhabitable. God’s first act of leadership is to bring order out of chaos.

  • Day 1: He separates light from darkness — establishing the boundaries of day and night.
  • Day 2: He creates breathable space — separating waters above from waters below.
  • Day 3: He gathers the waters so dry land can appear — then fills the land with seed‑bearing plants.
  • Day 4: God establishes governance — the sun, moon, and stars to govern days, seasons, and years (Gen. 1:14–19).

God not only creates order; He maintains it. The sun and moon are His governance system — His “policies” that preserve the boundaries He established. This is God’s character: He creates order, sustains order, and provides structures that keep chaos from returning. This is a picture of leadership.

Vision, Mission, Values, (VMV) and Policy are not tools of control — they are scaffolding that preserve the order God desires. They keep the community aligned, safe, and fruitful. They prevent drift, confusion, and chaos.

How VMV and Policy Work Together

  1. VMV as the Cultural Compass
  2. Vision, Mission, and Values define who we are within our organization. They align what we say we value with how we actually behave. VMV keeps decisions rooted in shared biblical convictions rather than personal agendas or emotional reactions.
  3. Policy as Scaffolding, Not Control
  4. Healthy policy provides clarity, boundaries, and shared expectations. It prevents misunderstandings, protects relationships, and distinguishes structure from coercive control. Policy scaffolding supports unity — it does not replace it.

Unity at the Top Creates Unity Everywhere Else (Lencioni)

Patrick Lencioni argues that organizational health begins with a cohesive leadership team. Unity among leaders is the single most important driver of unity across the entire organization.

Three principles stand out:

  1. Organizational health starts at the top.
  2. A fractured leadership team produces a fractured organization. A unified team produces clarity and alignment.
  3. A cohesive leadership team makes better decisions.
  4. Teams that trust one another, engage in healthy conflict, commit to decisions, and hold each other accountable create organizational order.
  5. Leaders must treat the leadership team as their “first team.”
  6. When leaders prioritize unity at the top over departmental or area loyalties, the whole organization becomes aligned around shared goals.

Unity → Clarity → Alignment → Order. This is Genesis 1 leadership in practice.

Leadership Implications

  • God designed the world with order, boundaries, and governance — leadership must reflect that same character.
  • VMV and policy are not burdens; they are gifts that preserve unity and prevent chaos.
  • Unity among all the leaders is not optional — it is the engine of organizational health.
  • A divided leadership team produces a divided organization.
  • Addressing elephants, shortening lag time in dealing with issues, and speaking truth in love are essential to maintaining order.

Powerful Questions for Leaders

  • Where do I see “formlessness and void” creeping into our culture — and what order needs to be restored?
  • How aligned is my leadership with our shared VMV — in decisions, communication, and behavior?
  • What scaffolding (policy, clarity, boundaries) needs strengthening to preserve organizational order?
  • Where is chaos growing because leaders have avoided difficult conversations?

Actions to Take This Week

  1. Re‑read your Vision, Mission, and Values. Identify one area where your team’s behavior does not yet match your stated values.
  2. Strengthen Unity at the Top
  3. Look for ways to build trust, alignment, and clarity.
  4. Identify One Area of Chaos
  5. Name one place where lack of clarity, policy, or unity is creating disorder — and take one step toward restoring order.

God’s design is order, not chaos. As leaders, we reflect His character when we build unity, clarify expectations, confront dysfunction, and preserve the boundaries He has entrusted to us. May we lead as He leads — creating, sustaining, and governing with wisdom and grace.
