Bridges and Barriers

December 22, 2014 by Dennis and Monika Farthing

Untitled-1 copya                   It has functioned as a communication device right from the beginning.  Adam named the animals and talked with Eve using a language. In Genesis 11 God deals with pride, ambition and disobedience by causing man to speak different languages. God’s word is filled with directions regarding what to say and what not to say.  The very Bible itself would not be possible without the instrument of communication known as language.  A language barrier to the gospel exists where people do not understand any of the 500+ languages that already have complete Bible translations.  It exists where no one that speaks a given language knows the good news of the Gospel  There are Bible teachers, translators, and disciplers in many parts of the world that have to use a language other than their heart language to bridge that gap. Our students, here at the MTC, are preparing to do that important job.

Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?”  The Eunuch replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with him.     Act 8:31

Reading the story of the African Eunuch, upon Anna’s request,  at least 50 times instilled in us a desire to be more sensitive to the Lord’s leading and to seize opportunities to share him in the context of our relationships.

Family News

Dennis recently returned from his annual trip to Oklahoma with his students.  It always is a very good opportunity for them to practice what they have learned regarding analyzing an unwritten language.

Lukas and Niklas are finishing their soccer season and have learned a lot while having fun.  Anna has started taking dance lessons and is eagerly learning the different steps. She has even participated in a dance presentation already.  Monika volunteering at Lukas’ and Niklas’ schools, helping at the Missionary Training Center and at AWANA.

Germany

Thank you for praying for our trip to Germany. We had a great time with Monika’s relatives, our friends and our supporters there. Dennis spoke at 7 churches and presented the work of NTM while Monika translated most of the time. We came away from Germany so enriched – probably due to purposefully visiting and spending time with people. It made us realize that the Lord has created us for fellowship and that this is an important aspect of our Christian life. We have tried to be more intentional in our relationships since returning to the States. We feel this is an area we need to grow in more.
