Amina is one of our students who could not read or write at all before starting our Literacy class. Most people have had some exposure to Portuguese literacy through the local government schools, however some people, especially women, either did not have the opportunity or for some reason were not able to learn to read in a normal class. This is the class that I am nurturing over the last two months and learning from as much as they are learning from me!
Amina is a older, respected lady in our community. She could however not even write her own name when we started with the classes in February. In this picture she proudly shows her ability to do so now!

Learning to read and write at her age, is no small feat! It takes a lot of hard, hard work and determination. Amina comes 40 minutes or more early every day to practise the syllables on the board and seldom fails to show up for a class. Will you pray with us that her efforts will be rewarded and that she would be able to reach her goal: to read God’s Word!

Here you can see how much she has improved! To make it even more of a challenge for Amina, she has cataracts and therefore can’t see well. We have adapted by letting her write in bigger letters and switching first to writing in the sand (to include more senses in the learning process) and then by letting her write the letters on a small black board before trying to write them in a book.
Her dedication and determination is a source of encouragement to us all! Please pray with us for all our students as they slowly but surely learn the art of reading and writing.
