Our brave daughter

March 28, 2011 by Nadia Hattingh

Heidi has been with us now for over 2 1/2 years and has taken to life in the bush like a fish to water! We can’t imagine her in a city set-up…

If she’s not up a tree (big, tall ones!), she is digging up remains in her and her brothers’ “archaeological” site. Where other little girls may be collecting stickers and nice clothes, she is collecting insects and small animal skeletons. Recently we killed a huge iguana (a lizard over half a meter long), and she enthusiastically dissected it, finding all the organs we are learning about in Biology…

On this picture she is posing with a scorpion she killed herself- calmly and without drama. Were her two brothers impressed! She waited until we finished with our conversation and then told without making a big fuss that she killed this silly scorpion “who kept on following me, so I squashed it.” Her brothers were not the only ones impressed … especially after seeing the “silly squashed scorpion”.

Sometimes the creepies don’t take to being looked at and handled too well… Once she was bitten by a spider – it didn’t like its house disturbed by Heidi… She was just curious to see how it all fits together and says she meant it no harm!

Tonight she was bitten by a small scorpion – and cried bitterly. She thought it was a cockroach and was again on a squashing mission. Some scorpions here are quite poisonous and may even kill a small child. However, she left the battle scene with only a burning, red finger. Thank God for his protection!

And thank Him too for our brave little girl.
