Dunked for Jesus

July 26, 2012 by Ian and Julie Fallis

dunked
The two Landuma boys on the right were baptized this summer.

Have you been dunked?

Two Landuma boys were dunked this summer.

One of them said:

“I believe that I am a sinner. I know that my struggling to do good works can’t obtain for me forgiveness for my sin. I also believe that Jesus Christ came to the world and died in our place concerning our sin. That’s why I want to be dunked here in water in the name of God and Jesus.”

It was a great testimony to those who gathered to watch the event, including many unsaved people. Praise the Lord!

But you may be wondering why he said “dunked in water” instead of “baptized.” It’s the difference between translation and transliteration.

Huh?

Transliteration means to basically use a foreign word without really translating it. Translating, of course, means to not use a foreign word.

So in most English Bibles, the Greek word baptizo is not translated as “immerse,” which is what it means, but transliterated as baptize.

But in the Landuma Bible, it’s translated as puk, pronounced pook, which means “dunk” or “immerse.”

Gee, does that make their translation more accurate than ours?

By the way, Jesus’ cousin is known in Landuma as Yahaya Wapuk – John the Dunker.
