What comes to your mind when you think about God?
Are we ever bored with God?
We were challenged today in class with this thought, “Your Christian walk will never rise above your conception of God.” Lael and I went through Bible school, and we learned a lot about God. He is omnipotent, He is good, He is love, He is forgiving, He is eternal, He is Holy, He is just, He is omniscient…the list goes on. It’s truth. It’s a great list, but is it just a list? Have I reduced God to a sterile box of academic terms and definitions? If I have, does this box of terms affect change in my life? Could continual failure be linked to a wrong conception of God?
Or is God bigger than our list of definitions? Does God desire relationship? How do each of these conceptions of God affect me relationally with God? God is love. How does that affect me? Does it move me to tears to know how he wants fellowship with me, despite my failures? Maybe I should quit trying to fit God into my cultural definitions in an effort to “figure him out.” Maybe I should focus more on getting to know him, rather than defining him.
God is not an American and our American values are not meant to be the foundation of the Church. When we’re in a tribe, the Bible must be our foundation not our cultural background. We’re learning to decipher what is cultural and what is biblical, so we can plant an indigenous New Testament church.
What a challenging class today.
