Day 6: This Is the Way We Drive a Car

July 24, 2023 by Jared and Carol Kresge

Yesterday we took a walk through the neighborhood; today we’re going to driving school.

If you were to come to our part of the world for a vacation and casually rent a car, you’d quickly discover that around here right is wrong: we drive on the left side of the road.

You’d also see a LOT of little blue vans. These are called mikro, a common form of public transportation. You might not appreciate these blue vans for their tendency to drive slowly in the middle of the road and pull over unexpectedly to pick up passengers.

You’d learn to consider the weather before driving through certain parts of the city. And always carry an umbrella.

You’d learn which traffic signs can be safely ignored and which ones should be respected. Parking in certain areas can get your tires flattened by the traffic police (but don’t worry because there’s always a blue van nearby to pick you up).

One last little surprise at the end of a very long day…

You’d also find that small vehicles may not be super comfy (especially when you’re bringing the four kids along for a weekly shopping trip…and Gabriel might sit with the groceries in the back and eat up all the snacks), but they sure do maneuver nicely on narrow, crowded streets. We were blessed to be able to borrow this cute little thing for our first several months:

Our 7-day blogging challenge will soon draw to a close, and now is a good time to say “thank you.” Thank you for praying for us. Thank you for giving to us. Thank you for communicating with us. You know who you are, and the part each of you plays is irreplaceable. Hardly a day goes by that we don’t long to see many of you face-to-face, to introduce you to our life here and the ministry God has so graciously allowed us to be a part of. We hope these days of public journaling have at least given you a glimpse into the adventure we are living and perhaps a twinge of longing to visit these beautiful tropics. Consider it an open invitation. And if you insist, we can even help you find a little blue mikro to ride.
