Our 10 days of real food are over! So…now what!?!?
1. Coffee creamer: We decided to splurge when it comes to coffee and go back to our regular homemade creamer that we both like so much (sweetened condensed milk + half and half + vanilla flavoring).
2. Whole grains&whole foods: I’m committed to continue using whole grains and whole foods at home… that means 100% whole wheat bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, no processed foods, no refined sugar, etc. We want to treat this commitment as a general guideline rather than a strictly enforced rule… meaning that some days, John can have some Ranch with his dinner, and other days, we can put some chocolate chips in our oatmeal 🙂
3. Sugar: We’ve been pretty impressed with how much honey and pure maple syrup can replace refined sugar! I’ve made muffins and pancakes and apple crisp and haven’t missed using white sugar one bit. Sticking with it!
5. Exceptions: We really want to make exceptions when we go out, cook for a crowd (like yesterday, when we made lasagna for 9 adults and 7 kids!), and when other people make food for us. Eating real foods is not important enough to us that it would replace eating with people, enjoying a meal that has been prepared for us, and engaging in fellowship without thinking about preservatives.
I am so thankful that we embarked on these 10 days of real food! It really taught us about eating healthier and being more aware what goes into our bodies. And it was a great catalyst for us in committing to permanent changes in some of our food habits. Thanks for accompanying us on the journey. Interested? Take the 10 Day Challenge yourself :)!
