Every once and a while I mention that I’m working on the recording draft. Last time I did that, someone asked if I distribute the recordings. It occurred to me that I should give a bit of explanation. My translation process involves many steps and the recording draft is the third step. The purpose is to answer the question, “What do you understand when you hear these verses?” The translation helpers listen to a paragraph and then tell me what they understood. I record what they say and look for misunderstandings, better choice of words, ability to move smoothly from one concept to the next, and for things that do not stand out enough to be remembered. It is very easy to make cross cultural mistakes and the recording process helps us see what needs to be improved. Last week my faithful helpers recorded the book of Ephesians for me.
Speaking of language helpers, I have a new one. She hasn’t started helping with recording yet. She is more of a consultant.
Do you ever comment online and then wish you hadn’t? A few weeks ago, I made a comment on someone’s post about getting in the right position to take a good photo. I wish I hadn’t because it turned out it was sort of like a first-year piano student making suggestions to a concert pianist. That is why I am a bit shy to make any more comments about positioning for a good photo online, but in this case, I’m pretty sure the subject should be in front of the camera. But, I won’t be surprised if the butterfly comments, “What you say is true, but you had the aperture set all wrong and I was correcting it.” I knew I should have kept my mouth shut.
Prayer Requests:
- In the near future, Heidi and I will be making a quick trip to town. We have several jobs that need to be done during the week that we are out. Please pray that we will be able to accomplish the tasks on our list.
- We are excited to be able to spend some time with our co-workers in town and some of them are going to join us on a trip we will be making down to the Ifugao area.
- Praise: This past week the village water system and the clinic generator broke down, but praise the Lord the repairs were accomplished without too much difficulty.
Thank you for your prayers!
God bless,
Jonathan & Heidi
