Sitting out on the back porch with Awayo was one of the most encouraging days of my life. Awayo is an outspoken believer whose life has been drastically changed by the Word of God. He looks like any other villager wearing just a simple gourd, a string bag and a few bead necklaces. There was nothing that made him seem too out-of-the-ordinary until he began talking.
Everything that he said was praising God or thanking the Father for what He has done! At one point Awayo said, “We as Christians, our greatest weapon is this [pointing at the Bible] but those who don’t know the Lord their biggest weapon is that [pointing at a bow and arrow].” He went on to say he no longer needs his bow and arrows for protection, only the Word of God.
Those simple phrases are amplified once you know that before the Word changed Awayo’s life he was a murderer living under fierce fear of the sprits that controlled him. Sitting there listening to Awayo’s testimony and later to his wife’s testimony I was just in awe at the changing power of God’s Word and God’s love and desire for ALL to know His saving grace.
Testimony after testimony I heard were filled with thankfulness to God and the hope they now had in a life together with God in heaven! Only once I heard one mention as an afterthought that God used the missionaries to bring them the Word. They confirmed that their change was solely through the power of the gospel!
This was amazing to hear as I have spent too many days terribly discouraged by my weakness and inadequacy wondering why I am here? Surely, God could have used a more appropriate person for this great task of bringing the Word to the lost deep in a remote village. But upon hearing the testimonies and how their life was changed through the POWER of HIS WORD I dare not question God’s ability!
When it was time to fly home after an amazing four days I all of a sudden felt a flood of tears filling my eyes. I felt such an instant bond with these people through the Spirit. When the thought crossed my mind that I don’t know if I’d ever see the people of Moi again, a young man looked at me and said, “See you later in heaven”. Now the tears were falling! What a joy, that I (and YOU) will one day see many Moi believers in heaven.
Our simple sacrifice of leaving home and family is surely worth the promise of forever in heaven. And no one [including me] is outside God’s ability to use as long as we are willing! -Bethany
This month we have been very encouraged by the many notes of encouragement, e-mails and a couple new monthly supporters! Thank you! Your investment into our lives is a huge blessing and really motivates us to press on.
Continue to pray for us
- For a daily renewed love for our Father
- For general attitudes and patience in the midst of stress and heat.
- For a continued strengthened marriage and for our children to know and love the Lord.
- For wisdom as we begin the process of team formation and deciding which tribe to work in
- And for encouragement and perseverance as we are still studying and learning the trade language
