Night Sounds

Mengen believers find joy in praising God

A Mengen tribal man sits on his porch to catch the evening breeze and contemplate the day’s events. Soon, tree frogs mingled with the sound of crickets, break the silence.  He hears angry shouts as villagers argue over some event.  Somewhere in the darkness, other tribal men are playing their kundu drums and singing to the ancestral spirits;  It’s a sad lonely wail filled with hopelessness.

But the night sounds in this Mengen village are starting to change, and this Mengen man is starting to notice. Now, among the sounds of frogs and crickets, and the occasional loud discussion, a new sound appears. It is singing. Joyful praises to Jesus waft through the night air, and drown out the lonely wails of yesterday.  What has given these ‘changed ones’ such joy?  With a grunt he climbs off his porch to join them and discover the truth for himself.
