It happens to be Tuesday, but this Tuesday is different. This is the last Tuesday of the semester! I’ve had a few days where a blog post might have been possible, but I totally chose to sew rather than write. God has been at work in my heart this past few weeks. My dad has been preaching through Peter’s second letter and is in the final verses. As the phrase, “casting all your cares upon Him,” came to light, my dad did a two week study on worry and what it truly means to “cast” our “cares”. I know, it sounds like a lukewarm, fuzzyish sermon series* about people who need to let go and let God…don’t be fooled, it will kick your tail if you have any bit of a “Martha” (Matt. 11) in you at all. I was convicted. That very Sunday night I told Payton that we needed to work on my life and change it around until it fit better with the “needful things” that Jesus talks about. It’s interesting that worry is not necessarily being anxious or fearful about situations, but instead has a lot to do with being distracted from the “good part” of life. That was me down to the letter last week. After two hours of heart-wrenching dissection, we had worked through it. I’ve got lists and charts on my cabinets with questions to ask myself when I can tell I’m turning into a Martha. But, I can say (and you can ask Payton too) that I’m a recovering Martha–I’ve been Martha free now for 8 days!! It’s not that I don’t have those moments where I pile up too many unnecessary things, but I am able to work through them and properly cast all of those cares upon Him. It’s a wretched business I tell you!
Payton has developed a love of hockey and plays floor hockey two times a week at 6 am and just started playing a pickup game of ice hockey on Mondays at a local arena. We all went ice skating a week or so ago downtown Detroit, my sisters included. Another week or so before that we went to a hockey game with some other folks from school. The first decent snow arrived on Sunday of this week, making it a two-hour drive from Dearborn to Jackson. Oh the joys of winter in Michigan!
We’re gearing up for a trip to California for the winter break. We’ll get to see Payton’s side of the family, which we haven’t seen in a while. It will be a welcome start to the break!
*If you want to listen to those sermons, you have to do a bunch of button-clicking. The church’s website is www.warrendalecc.org. But, the easiest way to get to the sermons is to go here and then click on “Morning Messages” and find the “November 28” and “December 5” messages (the December one is missing–not sure why?). I think if you right-click, you might be able to download the files for easier listening.
