Things could get dreary here. Michigan is wintery for such a long part of the year. I hated Michigan winters when I left a few years ago. That’s just the honest truth. Colorado’s winters were easy in comparison. I think the sunshine played a huge part of it–it shines almost every day of the year in Colorado. In Michigan, your heart breaks into hallelujahs if the sun even peeks from behind the snowy clouds! This year was different. I have survived most of it so far and without any animosity! It’s cold yes, but with people, a purpose for being here, and an intent to enjoy this season, time has passed quickly. Last week we ventured to a nearby pond for a game of ice hockey with some other students–a blast!!! I’d never actually played hockey on ice before and it was hysterical, I’m sure, from everyone else’s point of view as I did the almost-falling-down dance a least four times. And another infamous winter sport found itself in our Saturday night, thanks to my family: sledding! When you think about it, sledding is kind of strange…take your piece of wood, plastic, fabric, whatever, and fling yourself down a hill covered in ice and snow at high speeds just for the rush of it…and then, drag yourself back up the hill over and over again. And to top it off, you get to tumble and flip down the hill, dragging body parts over ice and flying off of bumps! Everyone comes home and tells mom what wounds they suffered, all with excitement bubbling from their mouths, complete with marshmallows stuck to their lips from piping hot chocolate. Plus, cold makes it easier to study when it’s freezing outside–less chance of being lured outdoors by the sunshine and fresh dirt. It’s the rain and dirt smell that always get me.
Speaking of dirt, summer is somewhere on the horizon–the plans are at least in the making. We will be returning to Colorado sometime in the latter part of May and staying until early August. Payton has the blessing of the internship at ABEFC again, and we’ll have a place to stay. God abundantly provided! I’m still not sure what my role in all of this will be. If He’s already directed Payton and put all of those multiple details into place, I can be sure my two feet will be placed exactly where they need to be. Even so, do pray that the Lord will grow our trust in Him! I want to be open to serve in whatever capacity He has for me this summer, with an open heart and a joyful spirit. We’ve got a large load this semester, and when I am stretched thin, it can be hard to trust God for even the small things.
Besides the summer, which is still far off, our classes are in the here and now and exciting to say the least. We’re being guided through the prophets of the Old Testament, unravelling the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God and His love toward His people, Israel! I can’t even tell you how much it fills me with excitement. It’s kind of like finding that there are 16 more books by your favorite author that you never knew about, and you can’t even decide where to being! Then, you also realize that you’re just like the disobedient kids in the story…oh the joys of Bible school.
