Back in Colorado

May 26, 2011 by Payton and Grace Downing

We said our goodbyes to friends and family in Michigan on Friday of last week and have already been in the lovely state of Colorado for three and a half days.

Our trip went well…for the most part anyway! We had a good drive to Missouri and spent the evening at NTM’s Missions Training Center with friends. Payton and I were both encouraged and refreshed by the time we set out for the final length of our drive. Kansas was loooong. The only hitch when we finally made it across that state was that the route google chose was quite short on gas stations! We ran out of fuel about 40 miles outside of Colorado Springs! We spent some time at a 4-way stop waiting to see if any of the passersbys had fuel. No such luck. We called our faithful buddy Garran who amiably rescued us from the eastern plains with a few cans of gasoline.

The time in between all of this Payton and I ate plenty of snacks, listened to James Herriot’s “All Creatures Great and Small” (very funny indeed) and debriefed the entire 9 months previous…well, not really, that would have taken forever. We just reflected on highlights and things that stood out to us. I plan on devoting a post to that subject later on.
As to the summer ahead, Payton is already into his 4th day of work as the ABEFC intern. It’s looking to be a full schedule as we’re trying to make the most of our time here. I was blessed to be offered some work at my old stomping grounds (Glen Eyrie). I’ll just be working 3 days a week, which is perfect for my wacky schedule (we have youth trips, events, etc). The funny thing is that I was alone in the house for three hours by myself the other day and felt like I was going nuts! I haven’t been alone at all for the past 9 months and it was eire not to have humans around. All of the church activities will keep me busy for the most part, but I’m glad to have work in between to make sure I have something to do–plus it will help with the gas money for the trip back to MI in August. God was very gracious to answer our prayers.
