WEEK 10 UPDATE

May 1, 2011 by Phil and Elin Henderson

This week the main feature was the Law. On Monday Francois taught about the covenant that God made with the Children of Israel at Mount Sinai (see the picture). On Tuesday we introduced the 10 commandments and taught about the first 4, those having to do with man’s relationship to God. On Wednesday we taught the remaining 6 commandments having to do with man’s relationships with his fellow man.

As we talked about each one we emphasized that in even having the desire to break one of these commandments a person is already condemned by them. We tried to emphasize that these commandments were not given by God on the assumption that man would be able to keep them. It is actually quite the other way around. God gave them to show just how hopeless our situation really is and how utterly inadequate are our attempts to please Him. Before we taught this lesson we often heard people expressing a desire to be taught God’s rules. Often people would say “we just want to know what He requires.” Now they know. He requires infinitely more than they are able to supply.

As we taught each law we would have a time of discussion just to make sure that the seriousness of the predicament they are in was sinking in. After many comments like “that is us, that is what we do, we break that law all the time” we trust that they are realizing how high God’s standards are and how hopeless their situation is unless God does something to save them.

Please pray as they grow in their conviction of sin and its consequences as well as in in their desire to hear about what God will do to provide a solution to this problem.
