This has been an unusual dry season. The main thing missing from this DRY season has been the DRY. It has been cool, overcast, and rainy when we normally expect it to be hot, sunny and dry. After days of wind and clouds it finally rained pretty hard. We even had some hail. Some of the adult men had heard of hail but never seen it. Those that had seen it say it has been decades since they saw it.
One that thing that always “falls” with the early rains is a tiny red bug the locals call “Children of God” (anana a Muluku). Whenever there is a heavy rain storm that is accompanied by lightning and thunder, as soon as people venture out after the rain, they find these bugs scattered all over the place. Since the people never encounter these bugs at any other time (i.e. when they are digging in their gardens) they assume that they are sent by God and fall with the rain. No one knows where they go because an hour or so after the rain they all disappear. They remind me of furry fluorescent reddish/orange spiders. I took a picture of one today but even by the time I took the picture the color had significantly faded. They have always fascinated me, especially since the locals know so little about them.
