ILHA DE MOÇAMBIQUE

February 21, 2012 by Phil and Elin Henderson

During our current visit to the city where our support team is based we were able to go to the coast over the weekend to take a break for a few days. While there we were able to visit Mozambique Island, a major part of Mozambican history. It was first visited by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1498. It was home to a chief named Musa M’Biki from which the name Mozambique is derived. In 1507 it began to be developed as a permanent stopping point on the Indian trade route. Later it became the capital of the Portuguese East Africa colony until 1898 when the capital was moved to the southern city of Lourenço Marques (now Maputo). It is now a World Heritage Site. Here is a picture of us as a family while visiting the island.
