COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT – BUV

January 1, 2011 by Phil and Elin Henderson

One of the biggest needs in our community is transport. What little the people do produce often cannot be sold because they lack means of transporting their produce to the markets. In addition there are many other transport needs in the community, like hospital runs. One solution is “Basic Utility Vehicles.” These simple rugged vehicles are known as BUVs and are made in South Africa. They use locally available parts and can be easily maintained. We are developing a project to purchase two for use here in our area. We hope to be able to train some local people to drive and maintain them and make them available to the community to help with transport needs. If you would like learn more about this project please visit the following site: https://www.ntm.org/give/give_project_details.php?project_id=127

Recently we were in South Africa and were able to visit the workshop where they are being made. Included is a photo of Elias sitting on one of the vehicles in the production phase.
