Simple Living …

October 31, 2008 by

Our Simple Living class included a two night camping trip in the cold Ozark Mountains.

Have you ever wondered what it must be like to live in a remote location?  No, or limited electricity.  Definitely no microwaves or television.  Too remote to run back and forth to town for some food item you may need for the evening meal or some particular part to fix the plumbing (assuming you have plumbing).  Needless to say life can be pretty simple and for two weeks we were given an opportunity to experience just a small part of what this might be like.

Of course being here in the United States we can only emulate tribal living to a certain extent but we sure did get a taste for it during our Simple Living class.  For two weeks we said no to television (not a big deal for us as we only get one static channel anyhow), we said no to the microwave (What?  No microwave popcorn!), and we cooked all of our food from scratch (this too was less of a challenge for my wife but when they said I too would have to prepare three meals we thought things were getting pretty tough).

All and all it was a great experience.  During that time we spent two nights camping, which though it was quite cold at night, it proved to be a great opportunity to get out as a family.  My wife also learned to cut my hair and so I will likely never need to see a barber again.  How all of this training will fully manifest itself in the future is yet to be seen but one thing is for sure, it gives a whole new perspective to praying and serving those that already live in remote locations around the world.  Thanks for your part in that too.
