The first week of school at Numonohi Christian Academy brought back memories of previous teaching experiences and gave me lots of wonderful new ones.
The past two years have given me lots of opportunities to work with teachers, but this week confirmed how much I love teaching teenagers. There are lots of things about moving overseas that have put me out of my comfort zone, but I have felt at home in the classroom this week. I had forgotten how much fun it is to be with students as they anticipate what they will learn and get to do in the upcoming year. I forgot how excited I get when planning lessons and activities. I had also forgotten about the swollen ankles. Being in the classroom means being on your feet, something my ankles will get used to quick enough.
There have been new memories made already as well. The school year started with a school-wide devotion and prayer by the principal. As students introduced themselves to me, they told me what tribal location they lived in or how their parents supported missionaries by flying in supplies or answering financial questions. Our classes get to be amazed by our God as we explore the wonder of His creation. As students exit the room, many stop and say, “Thank you Ms. Green.” I know that I have heard thank you before as an educator, but it is encouraging in this transition to hear it this often and sincerely.
I am so thankful for all these experiences, from the swollen ankles to the thank-yous, as they remind me of the unique spot God has me in His work right now.
