I got to go to the dentist last week. Yes, you read “got to go” correctly. We haven’t always had a dentist on the field, and I’m grateful to have checkups that prevent anything worse from developing.
The lady before me had had quite a morning of work. However, she was resting very comfortably as I had my cleaning. There were people moving around her and tools whirring nearby, and yet she snored softly. She looked wonderfully comfortable even with gauze wrapped around her jaw. I’m sure that the dentist and assistant had treated her with care and reassured her of the procedures. They have proven themselves capable with others over and over again. She had every reason to believe that she would be taken care of and that she was going to wake up with significantly less pain. Even as she stirred, she was attended to quickly and with kind words.
I looked at her resting, and I thought of how much I want to rest in God’s goodness like that. God has told us what to expect and has proven Himself faithful over and over again. Despite the seeming chaos surrounding us, God knows what is happening and is taking care of us.
I realize the analogy breaks down since the woman had been given medication that made her so calm, but this was really my train of thought. This woman can rest comfortably at the dentist of all places! We can rest in God’s plan despite being in some uncomfortable circumstances.
On Sunday we were in the chapter 2 of 2 Thessalonians, and God’s Word reminded me of this truth yet again: “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.”
