Roasting hot-dogs around the bonfire late Christmas evening gave us time to reflect on our fun and eventful Christmas Season. The word ‘wonderful’ didn’t do the last few days justice! A few hours earlier over 50 of us had gathered around that same fire for a time of singing the familiar Christmas Carols, sharing from our hearts and then partaking of the Lord’s supper together. We had spent the last few days on our flight center – a place that always brings back so many incredible memories of our treasured years of flying in and out of our tribal station, and our boys attending the school t,here.
Now it was 10:00 p.m. and we had just finished talking with both Ryan and Craig – Ryan & Kara were at their home in Niagara Falls with Kara’s sister and her husband. Craig was with his future in-laws and their family in Birmingham. With an effort, we pulled our minds back to the present, being thankful for the time we had with our NTM family.
Lots of us had gathered outside for our Christmas dinner together, sharing foods and traditions from several different countries. Christmas Eve provided us with a special Faroese celebration. Besides sharing the traditional meal of duck, candied potatoes and delicious rice pudding with the Jokladal family, we had singing around the Christmas tree and then fun opening the gifts that God had blessed us with this year.
Our thought continued to wonder to the last few nights, having the children from the surrounding village coming to the center each night to sing Christmas carols for us. They always seemed so pleased when we would place a candy into each of their hands and displayed big smiles as they ran off to sing at the next house as well. One night after all the children had made their rounds a group of us got together and decided to ‘bless’ our neighbours with some songs as well. after designing our own ‘instruments’ and giving our best effort at each home, we enjoyed seeing the various reactions when they found out we were not a bunch of little kids – but their coworkers out for some fun.
Boxing Day was our last day on the center and that too was packed full of joyful happenings. The day began with a pot luck breakfast at the picnic tables followed by various outdoor events. In the afternoon a few of us decided to climb the mountain close to the center. I’m glad I joined in that eventful 4 hr. hike – I can’t say I was one of the first ones up or back down, but I did enjoy the view from the top, and had fun with our fellow adventurous coworkers.
