"If we do laundry every day, don’t take in any food, sleeping bags or reading material, all 5 of us can fit on the airplane!" The men had just gathered around the scales and had found out that they only 17 lbs. for cargo between them. They basically would each be able to take a change of clothing and their toothbrushes.
They had been planning this trip for quite some time – taken a break from their Tagalog studies – arranged a flight – watched the typhoon change paths which would allow for flying weather – brought their families up to the flight center and were ready to go, but would they all be able to fit on the airplane? Next came that walk to the scales. It was written all over their faces – they could do it!! John Burbidge had moved into the Agta tribe over a year ago. Having an airstrip in his village would save him and his future partners hours of both bus and boat travel. Several weeks ago we wouldn’t have believed we could be going into help with the project of building an airstrip in this tribal location. Rocky had first gone in to this tribe with our pilot back in February. They had scouted out the area, looking for the perfect spot. This was followed by many long trips, lots of meetings and phone calls which resulted in permission being granted to start the work. Now all that was left to do was to transfer the area from a land of trees, brush and unleveled ground to a nice smooth 350 meter long airstrip. As our husbands were in there working in the hot sun, sweating from every pore in their bodies, we were cheering them on here at the flight center in prayer. What a blessing it was to be involved in this project first hand. Getting this land leveled was not an easy task , but knowing this would be a tremendous help in getting the Gospel to these lost people made the effort worth it.
