Treating Noah for Malaria

October 8, 2010 by Simon and Annika Flanagan

Hi friends,

You can be praying for Noah, last night around 11:30 he woke up crying. When we went to touch him he was burning up so we took his temp. It was 103degF / 40deg C, these temps are usually only brought on by malaria or another serious illness or infection; malaria is the one we treat for first. We were surprised it was so high, so we took off all his clothes and started wiping him down with wet cloths to bring his temp down. Around that temp a lot of kids start to convulse. We gave him medicine for his fever and continued with the wetting down. We took his temp a half hour later, but it had only come down 1 degree. But later he started to sweat and his fever broke; He took a long time to fall back asleep , it wasn’t until about 3am that he closed his eyes and even then he tossed and turned all night long. His temp is still coming and going today and is very typical of malaria; if it runs true to form he will be his best in the morning and will cycle into higher temps again later in the day. He also has a cold running at the same time as it has ran through the house with Simon, Annika and Nya having it; malaria often comes with other illnesses. Malaria for kids as young as Noah (under 2) is especially concerning and so we would ask you to pray that the medicine we start him on today would be effective and that his high temps would go down and not peak like they did last night. Pray also for strength for us as parents as we are feeling particularly drained with all of the sickness and difficulties going on in the village we have been having to deal with lately.

Thanks for standing with us again, Simon, Annika, Nya and Noah
