Due to some very special circumstances and some very old construction and with the help of some very determined termites, our garage roof has been transitioning from roof to sieve. Most of the beams are weakened and some are downright useless. The time has come for a new roof: beams and all.
Over the last few months I’ve been gathering information and putting together a plan to get a new roof on as quickly as possible. Because of needing the whole roof replaced instead of just the covering, having a contractor do it all was cost prohibitive. So after working with an architect, filing paperwork with the city, and countless hours tweaking it, here is my plan for the new roof:
Yes, I do plan on putting plywood sheathing and metal roofing panels on the whole roof, don’t be silly. I only hid parts of each layer so you could see what’s underneath.
We finally got the permit pulled, and can begin work any time. I’m working with local friends and church to try to get a team together to get the old roof off and new roof on as quickly as possible to avoid as much of the rain as possible.
Please pray as this moves forward that we would get enough help, and that all the inspections would go smoothly and not delay the process too much. Pray also for wisdom on what to do with the contents of the garage in the meantime. We are thankful for the construction and woodworking experience I’ve had to be able to tackle this project without a general contractor, but there are a lot of codes to follow and sometimes it’s hard to translate the building code into actual wood and nails. Pray for wisdom and insight and safety while we do the work.
