After my last post, someone mentioned that my explanations of local phenomena to people in the US are also probably funny. It’s true. For example . . .
Walmart doesn’t exist in My Country. Instead, I find a lot of things that I need at the local “boutique.” If you wanted to open a boutique, imagine you open a little mom-and-pop shop in your bathroom but put it right next to your mailbox.
Now, they don’t have mailboxes there and you wouldn’t really open up a shop in your bathroom, but that description gives you a little idea of the size (bathroom size), the availability of goods (a mom-and-pop-shop-like collection) and the location (not in the house, but right by the road).
Actually, the afternoon after I gave that description, I got an e-mail from a family from church whose three little boys had opened their own boutique on the front porch. Glad to hear someone was listening when I was talking (even though the location was a little wrong)!
