Yup, that’s what I heard on Sunday when I was back in a village in my people group, sitting with my friend Minata. There was another young lady there, with her one-year-old daughter, and after a while Minata asked me, “Do you know this young lady?” When I said that I didn’t, she told me, “This is my husband’s girlfriend. The baby is my husband’s baby. Pretty soon they’ll get married and she’ll be my co-wife. You can come back for the wedding.”
Can you imagine? Coming from an American point of view, it’s rather incomprehensible. But for them, it’s the way life is, whether they like it or not. It is also something I’ll have to be careful of, though, since that day I also got several comments from ladies in the village, saying that I’d make a good co-wife for Minata. After already being introduced to her husband’s girlfriend, I don’t think that they were completely joking. Pray for wisdom in relationships and that people will understand that I do NOT plan on being someone’s second or third wife. 🙂
