Mountain meanings for June 2012

June 4, 2012 by Theo and Martha Enns

« Dèyè mòn gen mòn. » = “Behind mountains there are mountains.” = There’s a hidden meaning to what is being said.

One of the mountains in Haiti

A book we picked up in Haiti is called Hidden Meanings (Truth and Secrets in Haiti’s Creole Proverbs). Our own Haiti project gives us another meaning to the above proverb: when we think we’ve reached a mountain top on a specific goal, we find still more mountains waiting to be climbed. One example was after writing the lesson on the Passover, we found out that the French title does not have an exact match in Creole. The English word “Passover” sounds like God’s promise that He would “pass over” the homes protected by the blood. We knew that in French, there already was a difference, since Passover is known as «la Pâque», which French-as-a second-language people is often confuse with «Pâques» = Easter. But now we find out that Creole translates Passover differently again: as «Delivrans» = deliverance. So our 4-day lesson plan really needed to have a different emphasis from the one we typically use in English, since the word-play about the promise that the Angel would “pass over” them doesn’t explain Passover for a Haitian second grade child. We now needed to tackle this new “mountain peak” to adjust this lesson so that it would more easily communicate this Biblical principle to the Creole-speaking students.

A Biblical proverb says that “There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless, the Lord’s counsel – that will stand. (Prov.19:9)” This proverb doesn’t condemn the many plans and goals we set, but reassures us that the ultimate plan comes from Him. We planned to sell our house and move to Florida last year already, to participate in the Firm Foundation school project which would help prepare us for writing Bible curriculums for Haiti. That hasn’t happened yet. So we are doing what we can from here (through email correspondence with Haitian teachers), and we invite you to continue praying with us – that His plans be accomplished in seeing this project through.

PRAY with us:

1- as Theo writes & edits the Grade Two Bible lessons in the next 2 months; and gets the Grade One textbooks & workbooks printed and shipped to Haiti by this summer.

2- for the development of the Firm Foundation international school project in Florida in the following months.

3- for our house in AL to sell & for our monthly support to increase, as we press up these Bible curriculum mountains for Haiti.

PRAISE GOD with us:

1- for the Haitian teachers who are helping find the hidden meanings that would best express His Truth to their second grade students.

2- as each mountain (each of the 140 lesson plans that gets developed) is conquered week by week.

3- that God doesn’t leave us up to our own many plans, but guides us into His plan, and give us each a part!

Martha and I thank you for joining us by your faithful prayers,
