A student’s testimonial

July 17, 2006 by

We want to thank you for your continued support—prayer and financial. God continues to bless our time here at Faith Academy. It is my privilege to work with students who learn differently. I asked one of my students, a graduating senior, to write a short testimonial of her time in Discovery; it is as follows:
“I found out that I had learning disabilities when I was in 6th grade. Since I was leaving on home furlough the following year, I wasn’t put into the Discovery Program until my 8th grade year. When I first started the program, I found it difficult. I had to do Discovery homework and the Discovery class time really challenged me and my brain. I caught on and learned to enjoy it. It was hard to accept that I needed help but I am very grateful for all the time and effort the therapists put into my life. I was in the program for 4 years.
Discovery or NILD has helped me in more ways than I ever imagined. Discovery helped me become my own self advocate. I learned to ask questions when I didn’t understand something. I also learned to re-read over a word I didn’t understand, and look it up in the dictionary, rather than skip it. My test-taking skills improved. My self confidence grew as I progressed through the program. The program taught me how to pace myself to get all my homework completed. I used to feel dumb for being in the class until I found out that Discovery could help everyone. I wasn’t dumb; I just needed some extra help getting over the hurdles.
I’m grateful to the therapists who helped and encouraged me in the program and to the school for having the program. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have gotten the help I needed to get through school successfully. I am now looking forward to attending college to become a teacher.

We do praise God for the Discovery Program and how it continues to help students.

A few people have asked how we are doing financially. Our utilities (gas and electricity) and gas (petroleum) have increased just like it has in the States. Those increases directly affect other costs as well. (Even our car insurance in the Philippines literally doubled this past year.) In addition to those increases, the Philippine government recently slapped a new 12% tax on everything we purchase. We were blessed before and only paid a small tax on imported items, but now there is a tax on everything—even electricity. So our cost of living has definitely increased and we are concerned. Please pray for us as we trust God to supply for our needs.

Lastly, pray for wisdom in regards to our van: it looks nice and rides nice, but in the two years we have owned it, we poured $2000 in maintenance and now the transmission is acting funny. Pray for wisdom and the finances to either fix it or replace it.

Have a great day and thanks so much for praying for us!

In Christ,
Walter for the Seven Spicers
