The believers in Wusuraambya meet on Friday mornings. They are studying the book of Acts. Their desire is to follow the example of the Early Church and meet for fellowship, sing praises to God, and partake in Communion. Because our missionary team would like the church to become indigenous and independent of us, we have "stepped back" and watched them as they decide what to use for the Communion elements.
Since the villagers have no stoves, ovens and stores that sell bread, they are using white sweet potatoes to represent Christ’s sacrificial body. The villagers are subsistence gardeners and their main crops are taro and sweet potatoes. One lady told us, "if I do not eat a sweet potato before I go work in my garden, I will not have the strength I need for the day". How appropriate that Jesus said, "I am the bread of life"! Their "bread" that sustains them daily is sweet potatoes so it is a perfect picture of Christ.
At the present time, the believers do have red juice that they have gotten somewhere…maybe someone who has been to town. We do not know. In the future, they may use something else to represent Christ’s shed blood for their sins. They do have a dark red fruit called "marita". It is possible that they will use "marita" in the future.
It is exciting for us to see the believers as they grow in their faith during their Communion services.
